The ranch contains buttermilk as one of its ingredients. The fact that buttermilk is dairy may cause our dogs to vomit have upset stomachs or diarrhea as well as a host of other health issues because most adult dogs are lactose intolerant.

Many people believe that buttermilk is fine for dogs since it is lower in lactose than regular milk and it contains the necessary bacteria to aid in the digestion of lactose.

However a closer look at the ingredients used to make Ranch buttermilk suggests that it may not be safe for dogs. Buttermilk is made from low-fat milk and nonfat dry milk as well as modified corn starch carrageenan locust bean gum and salt.

As a commonly used bulking agent in commercial dog foods modified corn starch is considered safe for dogs. If your dog family member is allergic to corn products its best not to feed them Ranch.

In buttermilk carrageenan is used as a thickener stabilizer and binder. Even though the FDA and AAFCO consider carrageenan to be a safe food additive many studies have shown that it can have the following effects on our pets:

  • Your dogs digestive system will be irritated.
  • There will be inflammation in the digestive tract.
  • It is more likely that ulcerations and intestinal lesions will occur.

Ranch mayonnaise contains a food additive called calcium disodium EDTA which is generally safe for dogs. An odorless powder calcium disodium EDTA protects flavors. Calcium disodium EDTA helps prevent discoloration which is why it is commonly found in many products such as textiles and paper.

A second reason why our furry friends should not be fed ranch that contains calcium disodium EDTA is that it is also found in cleaning products laundry detergents and industrial germicides. Due to this reason we do not recommend feeding this dressing to your furry family member.

Garlic onion and shallots are all members of the allium family. They are all toxic to dogs no matter how they are processed: raw powdered cooked or fried. Onions and garlic powders are actually more potent than fresh onions.
