In this article you will know the answer to the query “9 Dog Breeds With White Tipped Tails“.

I’d like to introduce you to my post about dog breeds with white-tipped tails.

A white-tipped tail on a dog is there for a reason like most physical characteristics of dogs.

9 Dog Breeds With White Tipped Tails

This is because a white-tipped tail is more visible in thick vegetation and long grass.

If you will these white tips work like a high-visibility jacket or a geotag.

I have listed only working breeds of dogs in my list.

A white-tipped tail makes it easier for an owner to find these dogs when they are working in the “field” following scents or herding livestock.

As a general rule a white tip only works on a tail that is held up high.

There is a label on these tails that states “gay”.

 1. Border Collie

Check the tip of the tail of any purebred Border Collie to see if it is white. Ideally the dog will have a large tuft of white hair but even a few white hairs are enough to tell you the dog is purebred. Farmers in the UK where this type of dog originated bred it with a white-tipped tail in order to use it as a guiding lantern. A Collies tail is typically long bushy and slightly curled.

Black Border Collies have white collars and chests. They all have a double coat whether it is smooth rough or semi-rough. Undercoats are silkier than topcoats.

Border Collies come in a variety of colors such as red chocolate lilac and blue but never white. An adult male Collies typically stands between 18 – 22 inches (48 – 56 cm) tall and weighs between 6 – 9 pounds (14 – 20 kg). A Border Collie can also be recognized by its famous ‘eye’ which is how they stare at the sheep they were bred to herd.

Today dogs are still used for this purpose by many farmers around the world but if you want to own one as a family pet be prepared for the dog to stare at you. I want you to take him out for some action. Its important to know before buying or adopting a Border Collie that these dogs require quite a bit of exercise. Just taking your dog for a walk would not cut it. You have been warned!

 2. Bernese Mountain Dog

Berners was once used to drive cattle or guard farmyards in Switzerlands mountains where they originated.

A purebred Bernese Mountain dog has a tricolored coat that is either black rust and white or black tan and white according to the AKC standards.

Typically Berners have some white on their chest legs and the tip of their long thick tails must also be white.

In order to withstand cold weather they have a long silky overcoat and a woolly undercoat. These animals shed quite a bit as well.

In the large dog category Bernese Mountain dogs measure between 25 and 28 inches in height and weigh between 31 and 115 pounds (31 to 52 kilograms). It makes them excellent pets since they are easy to train but being guard dogs they do have a tendency to bark. Because these dogs have lots of energy and need daily exercise they are not suitable as apartment dogs. Children can get along with them well however.

3. Beagle

His medium size makes the short-haired Beagle very popular among dog owners because he looks quite similar to a Foxhound.

They have a tricolored hard coat that is medium length but most puppies are born black and white. It takes a year or two for the black patches to fade to brown.

There are some beagles with a full whitetail but most have long thin tails with a white tip. Beagle males grow up to 13 – 16 inches (33-41 cm) in height and weigh 22 – 25 lbs (10 – 11 kg).

It is a good choice to have a Beagle in a family since they are affectionate playful and child-friendly. As with all hound dogs they tend to be a bit stubborn so they must be well-trained. Its possible that they are digging a hole or trying to find an escape route if they are too quiet while left alone in the backyard.

4. Basset Hound

The long drooping ears and short legs of Basset Hounds make them instantly recognizable. With their round pleading eyes its easy to see why Basset hounds are so popular with dog lovers.

Shedding is a common occurrence in bassets as their hair is short and smooth. Tans and whites or blacks tans and whites are the typical colors of Bassets. Their tails are long and slightly curved with a white tip. Hunters bred bassets to have a white-tipped tail so that they could find their dogs during a hare hunt.

Basset hounds are 12 – 15 inches (30 – 38 cm) tall and weigh between 50 and 63 pounds (23 – 29 kg). Despite a reputation for being strong-willed and needing firm training basset hounds are extremely devoted and fun-loving.

5. Jack Russell

Although Jack Russell terriers come in a variety of colors the majority of the coat is white including the tip of the tail.

A broken coat is a combination of both rough and silky fur. This type of terrier comes in both rough and silky coats. It is common for Jack Russell terriers to have long hairs on their long curved tails.

Jack Russell terriers weigh around 13 to 17 pounds (6 to 8 kg) and stand 14 inches (35 cm) tall.

In addition to being known for their long lifespans and good health these dogs are very athletic and are known to be hunting dogs.

When you do not provide enough exercise they may dig hunt for rats or destroy your favorite shoes to entertain themselves.

6. Old English Sheepdog

You can not go wrong with an Old English Sheepdog if you want a shaggy dog. The fur on their heads and tails is so thick that you can hardly see their eyes through it.

The coats of these animals come in two colors – white and blue gray-blue and grizzle. OES have bob-tailed natural hair on their tail which is smocked with white.

At maturity these males grow to 22 inches (55 cm) tall and weigh 60 to 100 pounds (27 to 45 kg).

It may seem like they have big coats and a bear-shuffle gait but do not be fooled by these characteristics. The OES has all the muscle they need and can be quite nimble when needed. They’re also very playful which is great when you have kids around.

7. Bearded Collie

What does this dog look like? It looks like a sheepdog.

Yes Bearded Collie’s do look very similar.

Exuberant and energetic the Bearded Collie is an excellent choice for first-time pet parents as this dog is highly trainable and obedient.

The matted coat of the Bearded Collies is fluffy and usually comes in two colors: black and white brown and white and gray and white. On the body and in the long bushy tail which has a white tip their hair is straight and medium-length.

Adult Bearded Collie dogs grow to be between 20 and 22 inches (53–56 cm) tall and weigh between 40 and 60 pounds (18–27 kg). Their herding instinct remains intact today even though they were originally bred as a herding dogs. As pets they have a habit of herding all the family members together for group activities. A very sociable breed they love to participate in family activities. Barking is their way of telling you (and your neighbors) that they’re bored.

8. Smooth Collie

There is a close relationship between Smooth Collies and the Rough Collies which gave us the legendary Lassie. These dogs have short smooth coats. Collies come in a variety of colors including pure white black blue merle and sable merle. On the tip of their long thin tails purebreds have a white smock of white hair. Because they shed so much they must be brushed regularly.

The male Smooth Collies can reach 22 – 24 inches (56 – 61 cm) in height and weigh 44 – 63 pounds (20 – 29 kg). Their smart easy-to-train and eagerness to please their owners make them excellent pets. In addition to getting along well with kids and other pets Smooth Collies make excellent guard dogs because they are eager to warn if they detect an intruder.

9. Cardigan Welsh Corgi

Cardigan Welsh Corgis are low-set and sturdy dogs that rarely grow taller than 10 inches (25 cm) and weigh between 25 and 38 lbs (11 to 17 kg).

Red brindle blue merle and black are all possible colors for the coat of these short-legged dogs. The name comes from their long tails similar to the sleeves of a cardigan usually with a white tip. White paws and white collars are also part of their appearance.

There is a different breed of dog that is the Queen of Englands favorite the Pembroke Welsh Corgi. The Pembroke Corgi lacks a tail which makes it easy to distinguish between the two breeds.

As a result of their small size Cardigan Welsh Corgis can live well in apartments but they do not like to be left alone for long periods of time. In addition they bark whenever they detect something unusual such as noise or an unfamiliar smell.
