Does Dairy Queen Ice Cream Have Xylitol?

correct answerThe Short Answer is:

Fortunately none of Dairy Queen’s many flavors of soft serve ice cream contain xylitol. Taking a quick look at the menu I see that ice cream is available in six flavors of Blizzards and three flavors of Classic Treats. There are several types of sugar but xylitol is not one of them. These delicious soft-serve ice creams aren’t exactly healthy because they contain unhealthy ingredients.

In this research you will know the answer to the query “Does Dairy Queen Ice Cream Have Xylitol?“.

Almost all of our dogs would spend their waking hours with us if they had the choice.

However this is simply not possible.

Nevertheless they are spending more time with us and becoming more important to us.

Dogs share their food with us which is one habit that highlights this.

A growing number of restaurants are adding dog-friendly items to their menus in response to this.

As an example Dairy Queen serves its famous Pup Cup which is a soft serve ice cream serving.

Is this ice cream contaminated with xylitol which is known to be toxic to dogs?

Its ice cream after all are not we?

I present them to you in the following order:

Milkfat And Nonfat Milk

Corn Syrup

Mono And Diglycerides

Artificial Flavor

Guar Gum

Polysorbate 80

Vitamin A Palmitate

Taking a closer look at these ingredients in the next section will help you determine how dog-friendly they are.

Are any of these ingredients poisonous to dogs?

Whenever there is a list of ingredients the “biggest” ones always appear first.

Milk and Nonfat milk

Only dogs who are lactose intolerant should consume milk.

If your dog is not lactose intolerant it is the most common ingredient in this ice cream

Our dogs will become fatter and their teeth will decay faster if they eat too much sugar.

This is a lot of sugar as it is the second most commonly used ingredient.

Corn Syrup

Although corn syrup is derived from corn it is essentially another type of sugar. Sugar makes up about 77% of it.

The rest can be found above.

When milk curdles before turning into cheese this liquid is left over.

In most cases it would not harm your dog unless they have severe lactose intolerance.

There is no information on how much lactose is in whey.

The only thing I know is that it does contain it.

Mono and Diglycerides

The chemical products are made from the processing of vegetable oils. They won’t harm your dog.

Guar Gum

The gum that is derived from cluster beans is called guar gum.

As a thickener it gives foods a certain texture and thickens them up.

In addition to treating diabetes and high blood pressure it is also used as a medicine.

Dogs cannot be poisoned or poisoned by it.

Having established that Dairy Cream ice cream does not contain xylitol and explained how some of its ingredients may affect your dog I would like to move on.

Lastly I will discuss the dangers of xylitol for dogs in the following sections.

What is xylitol?

The artificial sweetener xylitol is used in some low-fat and reduced sugar foods to sweeten them but it has a fraction of the calories of saccharin (or table sugar).

Additionally it is not nearly as harmful to teeth as ordinary sugar.

The reason for this is that the bacteria in our mouths cannot convert it into the nasty acid that rots teeth.

As an additive to human food it has several advantages but when it comes to our dogs it is very dangerous.

We’ll find out why in the next section.

Why is xylitol poisonous to dogs?

Why is xylitol poisonous to dogs when it is not poisonous to humans?

Blood sugar and more specifically insulin are the key factors in controlling it.

Xylitol is absorbed more quickly into the bloodstream of dogs than it is in humans which can cause the pancreas to release excessive insulin at once.

Dogs can develop hypoglycemia if this happens and if left untreated this condition can be fatal.

What are the signs of xylitol poisoning in dogs?

The typical signs of xylitol poisoning in dogs will appear within a few hours of consumption and they will be the classic signs of hypoglycemia.

If your dog becomes hypoglycemic from xylitol poisoning there is a chance it may not show signs of hypoglycemia at first.

The symptoms of hypoglycemia in dogs include vomiting weakness sluggishness/lethargy difficulty walking/standing tremors seizures or a coma.

It is important for you to take your dog to the vet as soon as you notice any of these symptoms as well as if you know your dog ingested anything containing xylitol.

How much xylitol does it take to poison a dog?

Since xylitol does not take much to cause a negative reaction in a dog any amount ingested is potentially harmful.

The amount ingested is more likely to cause hypoglycemia if its relatively small whereas if its larger its more likely to cause liver failure.

Its also important to keep in mind that the size of the dog impacts how much xylitol the dog can tolerate.

In the next section I will discuss another ingredient that your dog should avoid in Dairy Queens ice cream dishes after we have discussed xylitol in more detail.

Dairy Queen ice cream contains cocoa (chocolate)

On the menu nine dishes contain ice cream as I mentioned earlier.

A total of five of these contain cocoa or chocolate.

It is unlikely that any of these flavors contain enough cocoa and therefore enough theobromine to bother your dog but it is something to bear in mind.

When cocoa is listed as an ingredient it comes near the end of the list so I do not think the amount is enough to poison your dog.

As a result it is only used in very small amounts.

You should be aware of the following:

  1. Girl Scout Thin Mints
  2. Oreo Dirt Pie
  3. Caramel Fudge Cheesecake
  4. Very Cherry Chip
  5. Chocolate Dipped Cone

Its best to avoid these flavors if you want to share an ice cream treat from Dairy Queen.

How about popular restaurants that serve ice cream?

How much xylitol are they containing? Or chocolate?

Does Mcdonalds ice cream contain xylitol?

Xylitol does not contain any of the ice creams served in McDonalds soft serve cones.

Donot be afraid to let your dog lick you!

There is an interesting similarity between McDonalds and Dairy Queens ice cream ingredients.

The Hot Fudge Sundae is another MacDonalds ice cream dish.

A chocolate sauce is drizzled over the same soft serve ice cream as the soft serve cone.

Oh and did I mention? Cocoa is a component of the sauce.

I’m looking at a restaurant next. Can you guess what it is?

Does Burger King ice cream contain xylitol?

Here we are on a roll!

A soft serve ice cream item is one of two main items on the Burger King menu.

The Soft Serve Cone and the Soft Serve Cup are both soft serve products.

In addition this ice cream contains no xylitol.

Chocolate is not present in either of these ice cream dishes.

Make sure your dog stays away from the Hersheys Sundae Pie!

Last but not least I’d like to check out an ice cream restaurant.

Does Baskin Robin ice cream contain xylitol?

Baskin Robbins has at least 23 flavors of ice cream available permanently in its restaurants according to my observation.

All of them do not contain xylitol which is good news.

In addition I assume that none of its seasonal ice cream flavors contain xylitol.

In spite of the twenty-three permanent flavors thirteen of them may contain chocolate in some form!

Keeping you on your toes is my goal!
