Pits are the hairless spots where these glands can be found. Dogs also perspire from other parts of their skin such as their paw pads and the mucous membranes in their mouth.

In their armpits dogs have what is known as lymph nodes. Filtration of toxins and bacteria by lymph nodes occurs within the lymphatic system.

Your immune system uses them to fight against diseases and infections incoming to your body.

What do dogs’ glands do? 

There are several glands in dogs that produce body fluids. Sebaceous and apocrine glands are the main ones that keep the skin healthy.

It produces an oily substance called lipids or oils to waterproof the dogs fur which is located on either side of the nose.

Sunburn and fungal infections such as ringworm can be prevented by these fats. Dogs do not actually get sunburnt but the sebum can act as a sunscreen by blocking UV rays. It also contains vitamin E so this natural oil contributes to maintaining a soft coat.

As part of their territorial marking dogs also have apocrine sweat glands in their paw pads mouths and anal regions where they secrete pheromones.

When your pup yawns or licks his paws apocrine glands release these chemicals.

It is true that dogs have many glands located in their noses and paws. Small bumps appear on the skin and can be found anywhere on a dogs body including their underarms and leg pits.

Depending on where they are located these glands perform different functions.

Sweat glands for example produce salt from water in order to keep your dog cool while other glands produce oils and wax to keep the fur glossy.
