What is long-grained rice?

Long grain rice differs from medium or short grain rice apart from its length because if it is cooked properly it becomes dry and its grains are separated.

Short and medium-grain rice have a wetter texture and are more sticky and the grains stick together more.

Is long-grain rice good for dogs?

To discuss the nutritional differences between short-grain white rice medium-grain white rice and long-grain white rice would really be splitting hairs. 

Since white rice is about 80% carbohydrates it contains quite a few calories.

Although it contains no fat it does not contain any dietary fiber either

Its true that long-grain white rice does not raise blood sugar levels as much as short-grain white rice but I’m not sure if thats something to consider when it comes to your dog. 

Besides carbohydrates white rice does not contain much else.

There are four essential nutrients in a dogs diet: protein fats minerals and vitamins.

Although experts believe that dogs do not require carbohydrates in their diets I believe that there is one instance when we should feed our dogs long-grain white rice.

This is quite amusing because one of my dogs had a bad case of diarrhea this morning (all brown water) and so they will eat rice later.

Due to its bland one-dimensional nature rice is the perfect ingredient for a stomach in turmoil since it is so easy to digest.

In light of my earlier comment it makes sense in this section to look at the differences between white long grain rice and brown long grain rice. 

There is nothing brown about white rice other than the bran has been removed. 

Brown rice is a healthier choice nutritionally because it has more fiber and fat if the truth is known. 

Adding fiber to your dogs diet will help to boost digestion and create firmer stools. 

Additionally brown rice has slightly fewer calories than white rice. 

The funny thing about brown rice is how much fiber it contains and how beneficial it is to the digestion system of dogs. 

As a dog diarrhea home remedy it is not recommended. 

A sensitive stomach cannot handle it because it contains a lot of fiber.

I guess that makes sense. 

The B vitamins in brown rice are also higher than those in white rice. 

Aside from boosting your dogs immune system B vitamins do a lot more.

Now that we have reviewed some of the benefits of long-grain rice lets move on to more practical considerations.

How much long-grain rice shall I feed my dog?

In this section I will discuss using white long-grain rice as part of diarrhea treatment. 

White rice should be combined with other simple food such as chicken canned pumpkin or cottage cheese. 

Rice should make up about 60% of the mix.

Smaller portions more often are better for dogs with poorly functioning stomachs.

When it comes to cooking perfect rice there are a couple of simple rules.

To begin with white rice should be mixed with water in a 2:1 ratio so use a cup or mug.

Let the rice sit in cold water for a few minutes.

Then use the same mug to measure out twice as much water and pour it into the saucepan with the rice.

Stir the rice immediately to separate the grains then do not touch it again.

Bring the water to a boil then immediately cover the saucepan with a lid and reduce the heat to the lowest setting.

You should leave it alone for ten to twelve minutes.

Let the rice cool off after turning off the gas.
