1.  What is Smart Water?

It is quite easy to become confused by this when performing a Google search.

In addition to being a brand of bottled water Smart Water is also anti-theft technology.

I will be discussing the former in this research instead of the latter. 

Coca Colas Smart Water brand is bottled water made from vapour distilled water.

In vapour distilled water water is heated until it becomes steam and then cools down to become water again. 

Since most of the contaminants and minerals have been removed from distilled water it is purer than tap water.

A solution of electrolytes is added to the distilled water after it has been distilled. 

Smart Water also does not use water from the tap. 

Many people consider Spring water to be pure because it is sourced from a spring in the North of England.

2. Why are electrolytes added to bottled water?

Sodium chloride potassium calcium and sodium chloride are some of the many electrolytes.

Electrolytes are important for a number of critical bodily functions including regulating blood pressure. 

However the bodies of humans and dogs should already contain enough electrolytes to do everything they need to do. 

Because electrolytes are lost as we sweat these electrolyte drinks target active individuals and athletes. 

Besides being found in fancy bottled water electrolytes are also found in many of the everyday foods we eat. 

Many of our tap waters contain electrolytes as well. 

3. How might smart water benefit dogs?

Drinking Smart Water will be of minimal benefit to most dogs it must be said.

However there are specific cases in which giving your dog smart water might help. 

Although dogs do not sweat like humans they do lose electrolytes when they become dehydrated.

When your dog becomes too dehydrated one way to rehydrate them is to get them to drink electrolyte water. 

Making your own electrolyte-containing drink

Theres no need to buy these electrolytes in bottles if you’re thinking about boosting your dogs electrolyte consumption.

You can make a homemade electrolyte drink yourself if you have some time and a few simple ingredients.

This recipe was designed to be consumed by people not dogs.

Nevertheless I checked the ingredients and it does not contain anything toxic for your dog.

The drink contains water lemon salt and honey. 

In our earlier list of electrolytes salt is an excellent source of sodium and lemons are an excellent source of calcium. 

It remains to be seen whether or not they will drink it.

4. Smart water isn’t the only distilled water

It has already been mentioned how huge the publics appetite for bottled water is around the world.

Smart Water is only one of many brands of distilled water (with electrolytes) available.

The brand Pedialyte is also very popular. 

Electrolytes are also often added to bottled waters with vitamin additions.

5. Why don’t we just give our dogs tap water?

Considering that tap water is by far the cheapest form of clean water available to most of us why are we so obsessed with bottled water?

Bottled water is an obsession among Americans. 

Americans consumed 43 gallons of the stuff a year on average in 2019.

The volume of water in 2008 was 30 gallons and the volume in 1976 was a little over a gallon.

This was an increase of 5 gallons over 2016. 

Ninety per cent of Americans report drinking bottled water instead of tap water because it is safer and better quality. 

Thats simply not the case.

70% of the bottled water sold in the US is not regulated by the FDA. 

The organization in America responsible for maintaining the standards of tap water sets legal limits on 90 different contaminants. 

A recent report estimated that 30 million Americans did not have access to safe drinking water at the beginning of 2019. 

6. Why is water so important to dogs?

Recently I had one of those moments where I realized I should have covered some basics earlier in the article.

The importance of water to dogs should have been explained to you.

Dogs are 80% water so water is so crucial to their wellbeing.

A dogs body relies on water to perform all of its functions.

The food that dogs eat or the water that they drink are essential to replace the lost water that they lose (such as by peeing). 

Dogs can become very ill if they lose between 10 and 15% of their body water.

Water plays an even greater role in puppies.

As they are still growing they consume more water than adult dogs which makes them much more susceptible to dehydration. 

7. How much water should a dog drink?

Approximately one fluid ounce of fluid per pound of body weight is the easiest guide to follow. 

Therefore my 60 pound Golden Retriever needs to drink around 60 fluid ounces per day (which is 1.8 litres).

The weight of every 60 lb dog varies so this should only be used as a rough guide.

The following three factors are also important:

•  The amount of activity your dog has
• Depending on whether it eats dry food or wet food
• And whether it is summer autumn winter or spring. 

8. Why should you know about your dog’s water?

When it comes to getting our dog to drink water there are so many fancy options that it is easy to become distracted.

I am not sure if it matters whether your dog drinks Smart Water spring water or just regular water from the tap.

As a whole apart from slight differences in taste there are very few differences in how healthy the water is.

The bowl from which they drink water is far more important than how clean it is.

The focus should really be on that as concerned dog owners.

A study from 2011 found that pet dishes (those used to eat or drink from) are the fourth most germ-infested items in a typical American home. 

Is that really true?

The germs in dog bowls are not only harmful to dogs but they are also potentially deadly to their owners.

Here we’re talking about E. coli salmonella and MRSA. 

Fortunately it can be fixed with hot soapy water and a brush.

Donot forget to do it every single day!

9. Can a dog drink Smart Water?

Donot hesitate to give your dog sophisticated water brands such as Smart Water if you wish.

You can rest assured that the bottles contain no harmful or poisonous substances for your dog.

The benefit of drinking bottled water for your dog is no greater than the benefit of drinking fresh and clean tap water from a clean bowl.

Water from your tap is safe as long as it is clean.

In spite of the fact that Smart Water bottles contain electrolytes if your dog is eating a balanced diet he would not need any more electrolytes than he is already getting. 

Buying bottled water for you and your dog is perhaps the best course of action if you live in an area without access to safe drinking water.

In contrast buying Smart Water bottles is the equivalent of buying a Ferrari when you only need a car to get from A to B.
